Collection - No 14Western HemlockNative to western America Japan and China, a very tall tree growing upwards of 250 feet at maturity. Dark green foliage of fine needle shaped leaves make it ideal for bonsai. Often used as a timber crop due to its tall strong trunk growth. This particular specimen was found on a collecting trip at Hednesford, Cannock Chase, around 1995 by Gill Duxbury Taylor, The tree was in a former quarry that had become a landfill site that is now a hill! This bonsai has been styled and developed over the years and was donated to the National Bonsai Collection in early 2017.
General CareWestern Hemlock are shade tolerant but do not like dry roots. Care should be taken when feeding, as they prefer rotted organic matter, in particular wood, when added to the repotting soil mix. Hemlock do not tolerate high nitrate feeds. Tip pruning throughout the growing season to maintain form and style is a regular requirement.
