Maintenance Pruning

Bonsai need to be pruned during their growth cycle otherwise they will lose their shape. It is difficult to explain all the pruning techniques for each species in sufficient detail here. So to simplify matters here is a summary for deciduous trees.

Wait until you are sure your tree is growing strong and healthy before you begin pruning there is little point pruning a weak tree. The signs of vigour can be noticed as strong new stems that are extending in length, leaves are the same green colour all over (new growth may be slightly lighter) and there is also evidence of new buds developing.

To prune, wait until there has been some extension growth then prune to leave at least two buds on each branch at the top of the tree and 4-6 buds on the lower branches. Your aim is to control growth rather than restrict it in order to maintain the health and shape of your tree.

The shape of your bonsai will have been decided during styling but you can make adjustments by allowing areas of stronger growth. Some bonsai publications recommend complete leaf pruning but this technique should only be carried out by the experienced grower and only then on a vigorous tree

Pruning pines and other conifers is also not difficult but needs to be explained verbally to ensure the techniques are fully understood. Your local bonsai club can do this.
