Bonsai Care

Repotting

Periodically your bonsai will require repotting usually about every 2 to 5 years. As with many containerised plants this is because they can become pot bound. Only carry out repotting during the dormant period either early or late winter

Examine the conditions of the roots by lifting the bonsai from its pot. If the roots are compact and growing in a circle around the edges of the pot then it is time to repot. Gently tease out the roots from around the edge of the root ball and trim these off. Remove any dead, black roots

Only work a portion of the main rootball no more than about a third to leave the rest undisturbed. Depending on the condition of the roots tease out the area you wish to work and trim these roots

Pot

Replace the tree in the pot and fill the space you have created with fresh soil. Secure the tree in the pot.

Water generously and give some protection for a couple of weeks.

Again the process above has been simplified. For a more detailed explanation visit your local club around February/March time when most repotting work is being carried out.
